Get Ready for Awards Season
Every year, schools, students, parents, colleagues, and friends acknowledge excellence in teaching by nominating outstanding educators to be honored for their work. The educational award season lasts the entire year, and it is time to start looking at this year’s awards. Here are suggestions to consider:
Thomas Brennan Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Teaching of Astronomy in Grades 9–12
The Thomas J. Brennan Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific is given each year to an individual demonstrating excellence in the teaching of astronomy at the high school level in North America. The recipients will have demonstrated exceptional commitment to classroom or planetarium education, as well as the training of other teachers. This award is designed to honor the practicing high school astronomy teacher.

Gary Dickinson Award for Teaching Excellence
SAE International honors a single middle school teacher or a team of teachers that have creatively implemented the A World In Motion program for STEM in their K–8 curriculum.

The Oregon-California Trails Association honors teachers and groups of educators who teach their students about the nineteenth century westward overland migration in the United States. This award is offered to educators who share the “love of trail history” with their students and colleagues.

The GRAMMY Foundation recognizes music teachers for their engagement and innovation in music teaching. The award shines a spotlight on the excellent and impactful work being done by thousands of music teachers across the United States.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching honors teachers of mathematics, science, and computer science. Awarded teachers are models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Elementary and secondary school teachers are recognized in alternating years.
Nomination deadline is April 1, 2018
Unsung Heroes are exceptional teachers who utilize new and innovative methods to improve learning; these educators have inspired and impacted countless numbers of students. Each year, 100 educators are selected to receive a grant to help them fund new projects. The top three awardees receive additional monies and recognition.

This award is presented annually for outstanding integration and use of technology in foreign language instruction. There is one award dedicated to foreign language teachers teaching K–12 and one for higher education.

Outstanding German Educator Award
This award recognizes excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the teaching profession by teachers of German in the United States. Separate awards are presented to elementary, middle school, and junior high teachers.

Award for Outstanding Science Teacher of the Year
There are two awards for outstanding science teachers available: those with 10 or fewer years of science education experience and educators with 10 or more years of experience in science education. Recipients are honored at the annual Association for Science Teacher Education conference.

Rural Teacher of the Year Award
This award is dedicated to the many teachers and administrators who significantly contribute to education in rural schools.

James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching
The award recognizes, encourages, and stimulates outstanding teachers of high school chemistry in the United States. Quality of teaching; ability to challenge and inspire students; and extracurricular work in chemistry, including science fairs, science clubs, and activities that engage the interest of young people in chemistry and related sciences are part of the selection criteria.

Dr. Elizabeth Watkins Latin Teacher Award
The American Classical League and The National Junior Classical League recognize the work of teachers of Latin in elementary, middle, and high school.

Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award
K–12 earth science teachers are nominated to receive honors from the Association of Geoscience Teachers. Awards are made at the section and state level. Nominees stimulate and inspire their students to learn about earth science and constantly strive to improve their teaching performance.
